Bicknell Veterans and Heritage Memorial

Bicknell has a beautiful and informative Veteran’s and Heritage Memorial that was dedicated on July 24, 2020. The goal of the memorial was to honor both those who have served in the various branches of the U.S. military: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard, and to share the history of Bicknell. The memorial was built to highlight personal sacrifices made to preserve our American freedoms and build our beautiful community. A Bicknell mother’s agonizing story of sending 4 sons into World War II, having two of them march in the Death Marches in Germany and Bataan (Philippines), losing one son to a sea burial, and another who was a prisoner of war for several years, is detailed on one of the monuments. Granite stones carved with both business and individual donor names line the sides of the memorial.
Contents of the memorial include five large granite monuments which include (1) a history of Bicknell, (2) those who have served in the Army, (3) those who have served in the other branches of the military, (4) the poem “Freedom isn’t Free”, and (5) interesting facts about
Bicknell Town. There are 9 explanatory kiosks outlining the history of settling Bicknell Town and the surrounding area, development of water and roads for the valley, early Native American residents, logging and cattle raising, downwinder events, and other historical information. The memorial also includes a covered wagon like those used by the early settlers and other historical
artifacts.
Visitors to the Memorial all claim that it is one of the most beautiful and informative memorials in the entire United States. We welcome all visitors, school children and others to our beautiful Veteran’s and Heritage Memorial.
